Salmonella is a bacteria that causes the foodborne illness salmonellosis. It is a food contaminant rather than a food ingredient. There are approximately 40,000 cases of salmonella infection reported in the United States each year.

In January/February 2009, more than 1500 products have been recalled in the U.S. due to peanut butter containing salmonella.
